Overall - the movie was " ok " - not as stupendeous and grand as Aaron made it out to be, and not as " good " as Jimmoi still claims it to be. My main beef is that the characters weren't fleshed out enough. Danny Devito could be argued that he's fleshed out - but thats bullshit because all he plays is the quiet and yet somewhat wise, experienced through life, mentor - so it isn't that he is " fleshed out " in-as-much as he doesn't say much of anything, leaving the viewer to " fill in the details " themselves.
In fact - the MAJORITY of character explinations come through other people ( Spacey about Devito, Devito about Spacey, Christian about Kahuna ) - which gives the film the " ok " quality - but I still believe the characters in-themselves should have been more prominant.
Spacey's character in himself was an enigma merely because he promoted one self towards others - and yet through Devito's character we find that he's entirely different. Now the characters themselves have no correlation with why they are there ( as it is stated many times ) - but they still play a vital part into how you act, and what one does. Spacey's character does actions which in-themselves are entirely unexplainable merely because they seem to be put there to be unexplainable. A " loose cannon " feel is exactly what you're suppose to feel - because it isnt that " nobody knows where he's going " but rather " the author doesnt know where he's going ".
The Christian depicted in this film I guess brings feelings of spite out from Jimmoi. He was hypocritical, judging spacey's character - but if you think about it - Spacey's character threw himself into the judgement light - specifically saying " If Jesus saw a woman in a buisness suit maybe the whole idealogy would be different " and other such things. I don't think that he is meant to be hypocritical in-as-much as Spacey's character is hypocritical in always speaking about adultry - yet never having commited it / and Devito's character in " not caring / giving up " and yet giving advice to a young man. They're all hypocrits - We all are.
My biggest dissapointment was The Kahuna. Always it is stated " he wanted to be left alone " and " his dog died " ... that is the extent that we know of him - and to some further extent : all that Spacey and Devito know of him as well. The viewer is left not with a view of " The big picture " but rather stuck with the two/three characters in a world where still nothing makes sense - and that people are just functions. It isnt profound. It isnt moving. It just seems to be.
Big Lebowski is moving, and profound. It shows an external view of " the big picture ". The same with Slacker. The same with The Game, and Pi. This movie wasnt moving at all. It was bearable, ok, and a movie that one could easily watch without getting confused thinking to themselves " Will Kevin Spacey Play the same damn character again or will he not? "
