The Fairy Princess
Over hill and under dale
The Fairy princess flew
Her little wings snapped shut
Against a wind that seldom blew
Her tiny eyes were gorgeous green
Her gown a royal blue
She plummeted at speed
Through valleys small to human eye
But where she lived
The valleys were enormous like the sky
The mountain peaks on either side
Were just as big and high
Her tiny eyes were small
Against the passage of her flight
Her hair streamed out behind her
Sapphire blue against the light
Her wings were just a blur
Of magic speed to aid her plight
And as she flew a little scroll
In both her hands she held
Her heart was icy cold
And overcast with lurid cloud
For she knew whence the scroll had come
And what it’s author vowed
And faster still and faster
Through a magic forest green
And quicker still she tarried
Now her wings could not be seen
She quickened from the horror
Of the place where she’d just been
And in her head – her promise
That “no-matter what occurs”
Her people would be warned
That in the darkness evil stirs
The future of her clan
And of her race, alone, was hers
Trees flew by on left and right
And branchlets clawed her face
Teardrops blurred her sight
But still she would not slow her pace
A branch swept up from nowhere
And she cartwheeled into space
Head over wings The Fairy Princess
Tumbled to the ground
Her body arched in agony
But still she made no sound
She lay there bent and broken
Hoping she’d be never found
But in her heart her promise burned
Conviction dwelled there still
She had a message for her queen
A destiny to ‘fill
So inch by inch she fought the pain
And repossessed her will
Once more she flitted through the trees
A bruised and battered soul
Her chest was fill of pain inside
Her fall had taken toll
But on she flew unwavering
Held cloven by her goal
Then her body gave a sudden lurch
And faltered in mid-flight
Her face set deep in pain
And darkness seemed to dim her sight
And as she flew she knew
It was her heart she had to fight
On and on The Fairy Princess
Struggled through the air
And on and on she fought with pain
And flew through her despair
The thought of her vow unfulfilled
Was more than she could bear
So to herself she vowed that naught
But death would bar her way
And naught but death would stay her wings
Or steal her will that day
And in her heart she knew
That death may be her price to pay
For she felt her wings grow heavy
Felt her body turn to stone
The sheer weight of her purpose
To be borne by her alone
And a well of courage deep inside
That she had never known
And slowly, slowly surely
She sunk low and lower still
And slowly but so surely
Inch by inch she lost her will
She realized her vow was one
She never would fulfill
Then one last time she gave her all
One last heroic try
Her wings beat sluggishly in vain
No longer could she fly
And only then she held defeat
And soft began to cry
The Fairy Princess fell once more
Towards the forest floor
Her pain had reached a zenith now
That she could not ignore
She’d offered everything she had
And now could give no more
The scroll would never reach her queen
Her plight would be in vain
But she could fly no longer
And her body ached with pain
And as she fell toward the ground
Her tears fell thick as rain
She glanced down at the little scroll
Her tears fell red like wine
Then suddenly in midair she
Was caught by hands like pine
She looked up and saw her soul mate…
… the next messenger in line
He gently took the scroll from her
And bore her to the ground
The vow she’d fought so hard to keep
Was now what kept him bound
They never said goodbye
Just bid farewell without a sound
They both knew without speaking
He would leave her to her fate
The scroll must reach their Fairy Queen
The warning would not wait
And so she bid her last farewell
And love to her soul mate
He stayed an instant longer
Looking deep into her eyes
And there he saw death slowly creep
And slip through her disguise
With a final sob he spread his wings
-Took wildly to the skies
And there she lay, The Fairy Princess
On the forest floor
She laid her hands behind her head
Allowed her mind to soar
She closed her eyes and then…
The Fairy Princess saw no more
